Anna Anthropy at dorkbot Chicago on Thursday April 5th at 7pm!

Anna Anthropy at dorkbot Chicago on Thursday April 5th at 7pm!

Anna Anthropy is an acclaimed videogame designer, critic and vanguard in the effort to reclaim videogames from the "culture of privilege and misogyny that has so far obscured the potential of what could be the defining cultural medium of a new millennium." A prolific artist, her recent games include the allegorical Keep Me Occupied, installed in public as part of Occupy Oakland, the playful Lesbian Spider-Queens of Mars, sponsored by Adult Swim, and the autobiographical dys4ia, which details her personal experience with hormone replacement therapy.

Anna is based in Oakland, CA, and will be visiting dorkbot Chicago as part of a tour for her new book Rise of the Videogame Zinesters: How Freaks, Normals, Amateurs, Artists, Dreamers, Drop-outs, Queers, Housewives, and People Like You Are Taking Back an Art Form, published by 7 Stories Press.

In her words, Zinesters is "a manifesto, a call to action, a do-it-yourself guide, an autobiography, in places [...] when our culture discusses videogames, it mentions corporations, blockbusters, and a hyper-masculinized 'gaming' culture. rarely does the idea of the small, authored, self-published game get much air in our discussion of art, even though it's these games that are the most important to games' relevance to a broader range of human experience."

Anna will be reading from and speaking about the book and her work, followed by time for Q+A.

Anna's book is available now: Find a bookstore (more info TBA about local Chicago bookstores).

Her games are available on her website: auntiepixelante.com

Hope to see you there!

WTF:

What is a "dorkbot"?! The idea of the international dorkbot network is "people doing strange things with electricity" and meeting in informal, friendly environments to discuss their projects. These projects could include hardware hacks, New Media Art projects, creative code, circuit bent musical instruments or wild DIY garage science!
